“Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.” ― William Shakespeare
Have you ever felt really excited about a new venture and wanting to take big action but then the self-doubt begins creeping in?
Do you really want to do something or take up a skill but feel like you just cannot muster up the momentum to get through the debilitating feelings of self-doubt?
Well, you are not alone. I think that everyone experiences self-doubt at some point or another in their lives.
But, how you manage the self-doubt and if you are consistently feeling and listening to the doubt makes all the difference.
What are some of the ways that we can manage self-doubt better?
1. Become Aware Of The Debilitating Influence Of Doubt in Your Life
“Writing fiction, especially a long work of fiction can be difficult, lonely job; it’s like crossing the Atlantic Ocean in a bathtub. There’s plenty of opportunity for self-doubt.” ― Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft
Have you had the following thoughts?
I cannot.
Who am I to do this?
I should but…
What will happen if?
How can I?
I am afraid that…
I am not worthy of…
This is not for me.
We have all had thoughts like these in the past but do you realize the debilitating influence that they can have over your progress and motivation?
Everyone has some amount of self-doubt even of they do not show it. I believe that the people who effectively transcend doubt do not allow the negative and crippling influence of doubt to rule their lives.
And I believe that not allowing doubt to take over is the key difference in the effective management of self-doubt.
Action Tips:
Realize that self-doubt paralyzes and reduces the quality of your life.
For every doubt you have, also consider the opposite as a real possibility: For example: “I am afraid that I will fail” can be reframed as “I am happy to know that I can succeed in this.”
