Raise Your Words, Not Voice: Rumi on the Power of Words

Raise Your Words, Not Voice: Rumi on the Power of Words

“Raise your words, not voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder.” — Rumi

It is one of those lines that stays with you, because almost everyone has lived both sides of it. We have all been the thunder — louder than we meant to be, and sorry afterwards. And we have all felt what rain does instead: the quiet word, said gently and meant fully, that actually changes something.

This is Lesson 7 of my free book, 12 Amazing Life Lessons From Rumi, and I have found it to be great advice in my own life.

The Regret That Follows Thunder

Whenever I lost track of the power of my words and carelessly raised my voice, I ended up regretting it.

That regret is worth paying attention to. It is rarely about the volume alone. It is about what the volume was covering: a moment where the words stopped being chosen, and started simply escaping. Thunder makes a noise and moves on. It does not nourish anything, and it does not convince anyone for long — least of all ourselves, later, when the room is quiet again.

Rain works differently. It arrives softly, it stays, and things grow because of it. Rumi’s image asks a simple question of every difficult conversation: do you want to be heard for a moment, or do you want something to grow?

Raise the Word, Not the Volume

Rumi reminds us to raise the consciousness, the integrity and the accountability of our words.

That is a very different instruction from “speak up.” Raising your words means choosing them with more care, meaning them more fully, and standing behind them afterwards. A word raised in integrity does not need to be shouted. It carries its own weight.

There is a second side to this, and it is the side we feel in private. When we say things that we will do loudly and do not follow through, it slowly erodes the confidence and our efficacy. We lose the power to accomplish things and be taken seriously — first, quietly, by ourselves. Every loud promise we abandon teaches us to trust our own voice a little less.

The way back is not a louder promise. It is a smaller one, kept.

This lesson — and the other eleven, on gratitude, belief, freedom, love and living your masterpiece — is collected in my free book, which you can download here: 12 Amazing Life Lessons From Rumi, free at launchyourgenius.com.

A Soft Voice That Follows Through

A soft and gentle voice that takes responsibility and follows through is magnitudes more effective to grow the flowers of your life.

Notice that gentleness here is not weakness, and it is not silence. It is a voice under good management: responsible for what it says, and reliable about what it promised. That kind of voice grows things — trust, work, relationships, and the quiet confidence that comes from watching your own words turn into actions.

So cast aside the loud rumblings of thunderous words that do not mean any action and fall short every time. Instead, back up words with concrete action. Let the next thing you say be something you will actually do, and then do it. That is rain.

Try This Today

Think of one promise you have made loudly — to someone else, or to yourself — that is still waiting for its action.

Do not renew it with more words. Give it one concrete step today: the message sent, the page written, the first ten minutes done. Then, in the next conversation that tempts you towards thunder, lower the volume and raise the word instead. Choose the sentence you can stand behind, and say only that.

Watch what grows.
