“We want it to be perfect. Just right. Nothing else will do. We edit and re-edit… But nothing feels right.”
I wrote those words in my essay “The Trap of Perfectionism” because I knew the pattern from the inside. Perfectionism can disguise itself as high standards. It can sound responsible, careful, even admirable. Yet beneath the polishing, it may quietly keep our best work unfinished, unsent, and unseen.
That is why I have gathered my perfectionism essays and my 12 Steps infographic into a new book: Beyond Perfectionism — A 12-Step Action Workbook.
This is not a call to lower your standards or care less. It is an invitation to notice where perfectionism has stopped serving your work and begun to control it — and then to move forward, one honest step at a time.
Why a workbook?
Reading can give us a moment of recognition. Writing asks us to stay with that recognition long enough to learn from it.
Each of the twelve steps in Beyond Perfectionism is a complete chapter. You will find the essay, a featured quote, an Action Tips box, and a short Try This Today exercise. Then every step closes with a Reflections page containing three guided reflection points and ruled lines for your own answers.
There are 12 Reflections pages and 36 reflection points in all. You can print the pages and write by hand, or read the workbook on your phone, tablet, or computer. The point is not to produce perfect answers. The point is to make your patterns visible, choose a kinder and more useful response, and take one practical step.
The twelve steps
The journey begins with Awareness: Realizing You Are Stuck, then helps you Understand the Types of Perfectionism and Cast Aside Unsupportive Past Beliefs. From there, the steps explore how to Let Go of Anxiety and Stress, Release Fear, Low Self-Worth and Shame, and recognize The Judgment Trap.
The second half turns toward Trust, Safety and Control Issues, the Rules and Deadlines that can provide structures that work, and Getting Realistic and Dropping Standards. You then move forward through Small Steps, learn to Become a Scientist in Your Own Life, and arrive at A New Model: Value the Process.
If you read the original series, you can revisit the essays here: “12 Steps to Get Beyond Perfectionism — Part 1” and “12 Steps to Get Beyond Perfectionism — Part 2”. The workbook gathers, orders, and completes that material in one place, with exercises and guided Reflections pages that were not part of the original posts.
More than essays
An illustration opens every chapter, in the Launch Your Genius green-and-gold style. The closing section, “The New Model: Excellence,” gathers the journey together. Excellence asks for care, attention, and growth; it does not demand an impossible finish line before your work is allowed to exist.
As a bonus, the final page reproduces my original 12 Steps to Get Beyond Perfectionism infographic at full quality, so you can see the whole journey on one page.

If perfectionism has been turning your care into delay, your standards into fear, or your best ideas into private drafts, begin with Step 1. Notice where you are stuck. Write honestly. Then take the smallest next step.
Good work does not have to be perfect before it deserves to be seen.
